Twelve Councillors have joined the Brexit Party in Rotherham, giving the party a firm foothold in local politics in the area.
The former UKIP group have made the switch, with group leader Councillor Allen Cowles saying: “We are going to make a statement early next week and hope by Tuesday the press release will have been cleared. We will do our best to answer questions.”
Brexit Party MEP John Longworth welcomed the news: “Elected Councillors from all of the major parties have joined the Brexit Party in recent weeks.
“Together we are ready to change politics for good and revive British democracy.”
It follows the defection of two Labour figures in Rochdale earlier this month, including a former Leader of the Council.
As Colin Lambert explained: “I have served the people of Rochdale for nearly two decades but I no longer believe my former party represents the people of this town.
“We need to deliver on the referendum result, that is why I have left Labour and will be joining The Brexit Party – I want to change politics for good.”
