Eurosceptic Conservative group the ERG have today published a paper demanding an “unshakeable” commitment to leaving the European Union on October 31, deal or no deal.
The paper, endorsed by high-profile Brexiteers Jacob Rees-Mogg, Iain Duncan Smith and Steve Baker, the latter of whom insists the Withdrawal Agreement has “failed absolutely”.
Baker said: “The next leader of the Conservative Party needs to know that and act on that basis.
“Our new Prime Minister will have three months to get this right, or that’s it – for this government, this Parliament and this party.”
Baker has so far refused to rule out running for the leadership. Today he demanded Brexiteer leadership hopefuls to commit unequivocally to pulling Britain out by the October deadline come what may, else he would stand for leader.
The report produced today by the ERG states: “It must be the unshakeable policy of the Government to leave the EU by 31 October 2019, in accordance with democratic mandates and UK law. Critically, the EU cannot extend the UK’s membership without UK consent.
“The Government must rule out requests for further extensions. The Government must maintain the constitutional and economic integrity of the United Kingdom as we leave the EU.”
